Since the West Virginia Daily News last reported on Thursday, Dec. 31, the Department of Health and Human Resources has identified 6,833 new cases of COVID-19 and 58 more deaths. And with 27,418 cases now active, the Mountain State has surpassed 90,000 cases of the virus since the first case was identified on March 17 of last year.
Those confirmed deceased are a 34-year-old Wyoming County man, a 73-year-old Logan County man, a 73-year-old Mercer County man, a 67-year-old Wood County man, a 76-year-old Kanawha County man, an 81-year-old Berkeley County man, a 76-year-old Mercer County woman, a 69-year-old Monongalia County man, a 68-year-old Cabell County woman, an 82-year-old Nicholas County woman, an 89-year-old Harrison County man, a 73-year-old Cabell County woman, a 97-year-old Greenbrier County woman, a 94-year-old Greenbrier County man, a 70-year-old Marion County man, a 59-year-old Wood County man, a 73-year-old Greenbrier County man, a 94-year-old Hancock County woman, an 87-year-old Marion County woman, an 81-year-old Mineral County woman, an 85-year-old Boone County woman, a 78-year-old Hampshire County man, a 79-year-old Kanawha County man, an 83-year-old Mineral County woman, an 82-year-old Mineral County man, a 48-year-old Preston County man, a 77-year-old Hampshire County man, an 82-year-old Logan County woman, a 75-year-old Mineral County man, a 92-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 72-year-old Summers County man, a 68-year-old Wood County woman, an 84-year-old Hancock County woman, a 56-year-old Hampshire County man, a 59-year-old Wood County man, an 82-year-old Wayne County man, an 81-year-old Brooke County man, a 77-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 72-year-old Wayne County man, a 64-year-old Kanawha County woman, an 86-year-old Hardy County woman, a 68-year-old Berkeley County man, a 92-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 66-year-old Berkeley man, a 77-year-old Jackson County woman, a 72-year-old Ohio County man, a 92-year-old Mason County woman, a 71-year-old Ohio County woman, a 77-year-old Mason County man, an 86-year-old Kanawha County man, a 49-year-old Upshur County man, an 81-year-old Raleigh County man, a 58-year-old Marion County man, a 78-year-old Wood County woman, an 85-year-old Wood Count woman and an 87-year-old Wood County woman.
All together, 1,376 West Virginians have now lost their lives due to complications stemming from COVID-19.
West Virginia’s daily positivity-rate is 14.03% and the cumulative positivity-rate is 5.03%. The state has received 103,375 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, 51,646 of which have been administered thus far.
In Greenbrier County, active outbreaks have been reported at the Greenbrier Health Care Center, the Lewisburg Center (Stonerise Lewisburg) and Meadow Garden (Stonerise Rainelle). With an infection rate of 108.81% and a percent positive of 11.81%, Greenbrier County is designated as red on the W.Va. DHHR’s color-coded county map.
In Monroe County, an active outbreak has been reported at the Springfield Center (Stonerise Lindside.) With an infection rate of 82.86% and a percent positive of 8.74%, Monroe County is designated as red on the W.Va. DHHR’s color-coded county map. And with an infection rate of 45.04% and a percent positive of 9.25%, Pocahontas County is also designated as red on the W.Va. DHHR’s color-coded county map.
Between Thursday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 2, 45,616 laboratory COVID-19 tests were performed statewide, bringing the seven-day testing average to 12,945. The 1,542,793 tests that have been performed thus far represent 82.568% of West Virginia’s population.
At present, 805 West Virginians are hospitalized with COVID-19, 202 of whom are being treated in the intensive care unit and 90 are receiving assistance with ventilators. The W.Va. DHHR reports that 62,264 residents who had previously been infected with the virus have recovered.
