The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources recorded 1,199 new cases of COVID-19 and 23 additional deaths within the last 24 hours.
Among those confirmed deceased are a 74-year-old Hampshire County woman, an 80-year-old Cabell County man, a 71-year-old Morgan County woman, an 80-year-old Wood County man, a 61-year-old Mason County man, an 84-year-old Hancock County woman, a 69-year-old Mineral County woman, a 61-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 97-year-old Ritchie County woman, a 61-year-old Marshall County woman, a 99-year-old Greenbrier County woman, a 78-year-old Mineral County man, a 74-year-old Mineral County man, a 78-year-old Kanawha County man, a 91-year-old Raleigh County woman, a 67-year-old Marshall County man, a 78-year-old Clay County man, a 69-year-old Kanawha County woman, an 81-year-old Putnam County woman, a 71-year-old Taylor County woman, a 91-year-old Cabell County man, an 82-year-old Monongalia County man and a 97-year-old Jackson County woman.
In a statement posted on the DHHR’s website, Cabinet Secretary Bill Crouch said, “We mourn with all families suffering the loss of loved ones due to COVID-19.”
The total number of deaths in West Virginia attributed to COVID-19 is now 1,194.
There were only 5,976 laboratory COVID-19 tests performed statewide on Tuesday, Dec. 22, bringing the seven-day testing average down to 10,219. This is the lowest daily testing average the state has had since October. The daily positivity-rate is 11.51% and the cumulative positivity-rate is 4.46%. West Virginia has received its next allotment of the vaccine. The total number of doses received by the state is 60,875, of which 18,488 have been administered.
There are currently 22,826 active cases of COVID-19 in West Virginia. At present, 737 residents are hospitalized, 175 of whom are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, and 78 are being assisted with ventilators. According to W.Va. DHHR, 51,916 residents who had previously been infected with the virus have since recovered.
