The surge of COVID-19 continues throughout West Virginia. Between Friday, Dec. 18 and Sunday Dec. 20, 3,846 new cases of the virus have been identified, and the W.Va. Department of Health and Human Services recorded 57 additional deaths.
Among those confirmed deceased are a 60-year-old Barbour County woman, a 74-year-old Monroe County woman, an 83-year-old Berkeley County man, a 77-year-old Raleigh County man, a 77-year-old Wyoming County woman, a 17-year-old Kanawha County young man, a 64-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 58-year-old Kanawha County man, a 46-year-old Mineral County man, an 85-year-old Mineral County man, a 78-year-old McDowell County man, an 85-year-old Mineral County man, a 78-year-old McDowell County man, an 86-year-old Wood County woman, a 65-year-old Wood County woman, a 78-year-old Berkeley woman, a 78-year-old Hancock County man, an 80-year-old Cabell County man, a 67-year-old Mingo County woman, a 61-year-old Grant County man, a 95-year-old Wyoming County woman, an 84-year-old Wood County woman, a 77-year-old Marion County man, an 82-year-old Raleigh County man, an 82-year-old Mineral County man, a 75-year-old Marshall County man, an 82-year-old Greenbrier County woman, a 75-year-old Marshall County man a 90-year-old Jefferson County man, a 69-year-old Jefferson County woman, an 81-year-old Hancock County man, a 65-year-old Gilmer County woman, a 76-year-old Hancock County man, a 90-year-old Greenbrier County man, a 70-year-old Hancock County man, a 50-year-old Marshall County man, a 67-year-old Raleigh County man, an 88-year-old Hancock County woman, an 86-year-old Jefferson County woman, a 64-year-old Wood County man, a 74-year-old Cabell County woman, a 77-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 72-year-old Morgan County man, a 58-year-old Hampshire County man, a 101-year-old Monongalia County woman, an 87-year-old Putnam County woman, an 86-year-old Cabell County woman, a 79-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 68-year-old Monongalia County man, a 78-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 93-year-old Harrison County man, a 70-year-old Morgan County man, an 81-year-old Marshall County man, a 57-year-old Randolph County man, a 72-year-old Taylor County man, an 84-year-old Marion County man, an 86-year-old Grant County man, an 81-year-old Kanawha County woman and a 72-year-old Grant County woman.
In a message posted on the DHHR’s website, Cabinet Secretary Bill Crouch said, “Today is another hard day as West Virginians cope with the loss of loved ones. These are people – mothers, fathers, grandparents, brothers and sisters. Our deepest condolences go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this pandemic.”
All told, 1,128 West Virginians have now lost their lives due to the complications of COVID-19.
A total of 1,386,096 laboratory COVID-19 tests have been performed in the Mountain State, including the 7,872 that were conducted on Saturday, Dec. 19. This accounts for 77.512% of the state’s population. The daily positivity-rate is 9.40% and the cumulative positivity-rate is 4.35%.
Monroe County has been upgraded to orange on the DHHR’s color-coded county map. Monroe’s infection rate is 67.26% and their percent positive is 6.33%. An active outbreak has been reported at the Springfield Center. (Stonerise Lindside)
Pocahontas County has been downgraded to gold on the map. The county’s infection rate is 41.57% and their percent positive is 4.55%. An active outbreak has been reported at the Pocahontas Center.
Greenbrier County remains designated as red. Greenbrier’s infection rate is 97.27% and their percent positive is 9.52%. Active outbreaks have been reported at the Stuart Davis School, as well as the Lewisburg Center, (Stonerise Lewisburg) and Meadow Garden. (Stonerise Rainelle)
At present, 693 West Virginians are hospitalized with COVID-19, 174 of whom are receiving care in the ICU, and 79 are being treated with ventilators. The W.Va. DHHR reports that 48,580 residents who had been previously infected have since recovered.
