Despite being designated as gold on the December 12 update of the Department of Education color-coded county education map, Mercer County has chosen to voluntarily move into the red designation, and transition to full remote learning for the duration of the calendar year. And as the W.Va. DHHR upgraded the county to the orange designation on Monday, Dec. 14, it appears as though Mercer made the right decision.
Through a post on social media, Mercer County school officials reported four new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in individuals associated with county schools. Cases have been identified at the Melrose School, Bluefield Primary School and Bluewell Elementary School. One employee from the transportation center has also tested positive.
Mercer County will be maintaining food delivery this week.
In another social media post, school officials said, “All remote students will receive four day meal packs tomorrow, Tuesday, December 15, along regular morning bus stops. Buses will arrive at bus stops about four hours after their regular elementary school pick up time, which means buses will leave the food distribution schools at approximately 10:30. We will attempt to stay as close to this schedule as possible, but delays are possible.
Virtual student meal pick up will still be on Wednesday, December16. If picking up from an elementary school, arrive at 3:00 p.m. If picking up from a middle or high school, arrive at 3:30 p.m.
Another important note: virtual students who have been picking their meal packs from Princeton High School will need to pick them up from Princeton Middle on December 16.
