The West Virginia Department of Education updated their color-coded County map on Saturday, December 5. While Pocahontas County remains designated as orange for the upcoming week, Monroe County has been downgraded to yellow and Greenbrier County has been downgraded to green. Summers and Mercer Counties also remain designated as green, while Fayette County has been upgraded to gold.
Through a statement on social media, Pocahontas County High School said, “All Pocahontas County Schools will be operating on remote instruction during the week of December 7 through December 11 due to the orange designation on the WVDE map. All employees are to report to their work assignments on a regular schedule. Food distribution will be on Wednesday, December 9, from noon to 1 p.m. at Marlinton Elementary, Hillsboro Elementary and Green Bank Elementary/Middle School. Students are reminded to attend their online classes as scheduled and be sure to complete all assignments. Please be sure to stay safe, wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance and stay healthy!”
Pocahontas County Students are also reminded to “check your teams and pay close attention to the remote class times!”
Despite being downgraded to the yellow designation, Monroe County Schools will continue with an “A/B schedule.”
In accordance with the Monroe County Schools re-entry plan, “An A/B schedule will mean that half the students (i.e. group A) will attend on Monday and Tuesday and receive remote lessons from home on Wednesday – Friday. The other half of the students (i.e. group B) will receive lessons at home on Monday – Wednesday and attend school in person on Thursday and Friday. The 4-day per week schedule operates with students, who are under the in-person or blended learning model, attending Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, dependent upon the state color-coded matrix. Students in group A will be students with a last name beginning with the letter A – L. Group B will be students with a last name beginning with the letter M – Z. All siblings will go the same day, regardless of last names. Sibling days of attendance will be based on the oldest child’s last name. Under this A/B model, students will attend in-person two days per week and will receive instruction remotely, from home three days per week. Remote instruction will be provided by Monroe County teachers. Monroe County will operate on the A/B day model through the end of the first nine weeks of instruction. The situation will be reevaluated close to the end of the first nine weeks to determine if conditions warrant coming back additional days per week.”
Fayette County Schools also posted a message on social media.
“Fortunately, we have moved to gold on the school Covid map, so we will return to school in the blended model,” the message states. “This is the schedule for the upcoming week; Monday, Dec. 7 through Friday, Dec. 11:
Students with last names A – L will attend school Monday and Tuesday. Students with the last names M – Z will be in school Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Meal packets for virtual students will be distributed Thursday, Dec. 10 with details announced Monday.
Students, please bring all packets, materials and school-provided computers and chargers.
We can’t wait to see you!”
The West Virginia Department of Education will next update the color-coded county map on Saturday, Dec.12 at 5 p.m.
