LEWISBURG (WVDN) – On Friday night, Dec. 2, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans played focused basketball and cruised to a relatively easy 60-22 victory over the Hedgesville Lady Eagles, who were overmatched from the opening tip until the final buzzer.
The way Cadence Stewart started for the Spartans, it was easy to see early on that the Eagles were going to have a tough matchup.
Stewart drained a 3-pointer to start the game, made a nice assist to Ryan White then hit another long-distance shot for a 10-3 Spartan lead with just a little over three minutes gone in the game.
Two consecutive steals and scores by White and Kennedy Stewart, and another C. Stewart trifecta, extended the East lead to 18-5 as the Eagles searched for answers on how to stop the hot-shooting Spartans.
East (2-0) led 24-6 after the first quarter.
The Stewart sisters each scored a bucket to begin the second, then three more Cadence threes sandwiched around an offensive rebound put-back by Hannah Fuller, put the Spartans ahead 39-9. White added a 3 as well to make it 42-9 with 2:25 left in the half.
East led at halftime 44-13.
The third quarter did provide an interesting storyline as it took nearly seven minutes for the quarter’s first points which came via C. Stewart on two free throws. K. Stewart hit a 3, and those were the only points by either team in the third. It was really quite amazing that Hedgesville did not make one shot the whole quarter and even more amazing that the Spartans only had one field goal as well.
East ran in the backups for much of the second half enroute to the win.
C. Stewart led East in scoring with 32 points. White, who has only played basketball for three years, logged a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Those numbers earned her the Magic’s Computer Repair Player of the Game. Caroline Dotson played great defense, and Fuller was good on the glass again with eight rebounds.
The Spartans will hit the road for the first time this season, when they travel to Riverside this Tuesday night, Dec. 6, for a battle with the Lady Warriors.
