LEWISBURG (WVDN) – It has been 50 years since the West Virginia Osteopathic School was begun, 50 years since the close of Greenbrier College for Women, and 50 years since the close of Greenbrier Military School.
A golden jubilee for the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine was offset by the sentimental gathering of the Greenbrier College for Women and the Greenbrier Military School as they looked back at the closure of their beloved institutions.
A parade celebrating WVSOM’s 50th anniversary was held on Washington Street on Saturday, Oct. 15. The osteopathic school organized the parade with entrants representing the schools and the community.
Monetary prizes were awarded in several categories. Most were $100 awards; the school student entrant award was $500 and pledged to the school activities.
Winners were as follows:
1. Walker Entry (1-2 participants) who best captures the spirit of the Parade – $100 – “Fairy Godmother of WVSOM” Belinda Evans
2. Group Entry (3 or more participants) who best captures the spirit of the Parade – $100 – “50 Years of Moving Mountains to Improve Health” – Center for Rural and Community Health
3. Outstanding Antique Car – $100 – Dr. Michael Crews – GMS Class of 1972 and WVSOM Class of 1996
4. Most Elegant Entry – $100 –Greenbrier College for Women Alumnae float
5. Best Musical Group – Most Entertaining Musical Entry – $100 – 103.1 The Bear/Radio Greenbrier
6. Best First Responder Entry – $100 – Robert C. Byrd Clinic – Mobile Clinic
7. WVSOM Student Club Award – Best Student Club Entry – $500 – toward 2023 Club Activities – D.O. Care, Global Outreach
