The September program for the Maxwelton Ruritan Club featured the two candidates on the ballot for Greenbrier County Commissioner.
DeEtta Hunter (D) and Blain Phillips (R) each were given time to introduce themselves to the members and talk about issues that affect Greenbrier County. Members were given the opportunity to ask questions after each candidate spoke.
Hunter, the first female mayor of Lewisburg, spoke about a variety of issues including her concerns about the amount of money being spent by the county without good outcomes.
Phillips, currently a member of the Greenbrier County Board of Zoning Appeals for 12 years, and a lifelong Greenbrier County resident, also spoke about his concerns about excessive spending especially with the sports complex being a drain to the county.
Each agreed that commissioners need to be responsible with the taxpayer’s money.
All the members agreed that it was a very informative meeting.
Members brought in food items to be donated to the Northern Greenbrier Food Pantry, and Brenda Wallace passed out shoeboxes for the members to fill for Operation Christmas Child.
Members voted to donate a basket for the GEHS Band raffle that will take place during the band competition on Oct. 15. The club will begin preparations to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Maxwelton Club in 2023 and ways to get the community involved to help celebrate.
The Maxwelton Ruritan Club is civic organization that has been serving the local area since 1953. The members operate an ice cream concession stand at the State Fair of West Virginia and all proceeds benefit the local community including donations to local organizations and provide two scholarships to area high school seniors. They strive to make our area a better place to live, work and raise a family. The club meets the fourth Thursday of each month at the Henning Church of God on Vago Road.
