Most people have heard of firefighters rescuing scared kittens out of a tree, but there are many other types of animal rescues. For example, what happens when an unsuspecting dog falls into a deep hole with no easy access? Firefighters and rope rescue teams come to save the day.
Recently, Lewisburg Fire Company 20 rescued not one but five dogs from this precise situation.
According to a statement from the fire department, the Ropes and Technical Rescue Team was activated on Aug. 18 for an animal rescue call. Five dogs had fallen approximately 75 feet into a cavern. The statement goes on to say that, as an additional challenge, the team had to climb a steep, 70-yard embankment to reach the shaft where the canines had fallen. Additionally, the opening is in a thickly wooded area.
Once the team reached the opening, they quickly established a rigging system. This system allowed the team to lower firefighter E. Brookman into the shaft. According to the department’s statement, the opening of the chamber measures only about two and a half feet around. Once Brookman reached the cavern floor, one at a time, the dogs were harnessed and pulled to the top by the ground team.
Thankfully, all five dogs were largely uninjured, and none suffered any broken bones. While all types of emergency services receive plenty of calls that end in tragedy, this was not one of those times. At the end of the day, all of the dogs were rescued, and all members of the rescue team made it home safely.
