After playing defensive tackle the majority of his junior year, Greenbrier West football player Joey Terry and his coaches had a change of heart.

In the latter part of that season, Terry’s coaches moved him to defensive end, where he excelled to new bounds. He stayed at that position his whole senior year—and also played some offensive tackle—and the move paid big dividends as Terry signed to continue his playing career for the Bethany College Bison, a division-III school in Bethany, W.Va.

Terry will get a chance to prove his worth early as Bethany just recently hired new head coach Brandon Robinson in February of this year, and Terry feels like he can be an asset to his new team.

“Not only is it close to home, I feel as if I could be a great help to the team,” Terry said.

Terry credits his coaches over the last few years for helping him get to this point.

“Over the last couple of years at West I feel working with Coach Vaughn and Robertson that they have taught me not only how to be a better athlete, but a better man. Another coach who helped me a lot would be Coach Harris, he was always telling me how important I was to the team, and Coach Osborne was always pushing me to bypass my own expectations for myself,” Terry said.

“I feel as if my time at West got me ready for the next level by teaching me how to really pay attention to detail and to never miss an assignment,” he added.

A lot of Cavalier memories will stay with him for years to come, but a couple simple ones stick out the most.

“I think the memories that I will miss and cherish the most would be getting my first ever safety in a playoff game, or even just eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before practice with the other guys in the locker room,” Terry said.

Being a big believer in relishing every detail and every moment like it is your last, Terry wants the up-and-coming Cavaliers to remember one, simple thing.

“Just play hard and just have fun with it, because it’s going to go by quickly,” he concluded.

Terry will play defensive end for Bethany and will get to work this fall on his new journey.
