A Greenbrier County man faces charges for the misappropriation of property belonging to the City of Ronceverte.
According to Ronceverte Chief of Police Jerry Hopkins, on the morning of Tuesday, May 31, Ronceverte Mayor Deena Pack reported seeing three large, green Army ammunition boxes belonging to the city on the street in front of the residence of Melvin Honaker.
After conducting an investigation, Honaker was arrested for misappropriation of property from the old Ronceverte Elementary School on Academy Street, the city purchased the property in January but several items were taken from the building since then, including the ammunition boxes. The property located just over the hill from where Honaker lives and is posted as no trespassing.
Honaker had been spotted at the property a few time prior to his arrest.
“Yeah, we ran him off the property at least five times prior,” said Hopkins.
An ordinance allowing the city to acquire 200 Academy Street, also known as the old elementary school, has been passed and the city is evaluating several options for restoring it.
