If it was not clear before, it is clear now.
The year 2021-22 was not the year for the Greenbrier East Spartans to play the George Washington Patriots.
In any sport.
This past football season, the Spartans were eliminated in the state playoffs by GW. In boys and girls basketball, East’s hopeful state tournament appearances vanished at the hands of the Patriots, and to cap the curse even more, the Spartans baseball team lost 8-2 in game two of the regional finals to GW, ending their season on their home field on Wednesday, May 25.
In the first inning, the Patriots scored on a 3-run home run by Isaac McCallister, a single by Tyler Smith, a single by Joe Lively and a sacrifice fly by Eli Dawson in the second inning.
East just never could muster up enough offense to maintain pace. The Spartans had only three hits combined in the two games.
Eli Ellis was the winning pitcher for George Washington. He went four innings, allowed two runs on two hits and struck out six.
McCallister threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Jacob Roshau took the loss for Greenbrier East. Roshau lasted 5.1 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits.
Darris Boswell and Roshau each collected one hit to lead Greenbrier East.
George Washington had 11 hits in the game.
McCallister and Lively both managed multiple hits for George Washington.
The Spartans finished the season with a record of 16-17.
A season recap will be published soon.
