LEWISBURG (WVDN) – Staff from the Greenbrier Community Care Corps (Greenbrier Community Care Corps) will provide information to the public from 5-9 p.m., May 6, during First Friday at the Greenbrier County Visitors Center in Lewisburg.
Misty Boggs, program manager for the Greenbrier Community Care Corps and program associate in the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine’s (WVSOM) Center for Rural and Community Health, will explain how community members can volunteer to assist Greenbrier County residents.
Greenbrier Community Care Corps is funded by a grant from the Oasis Institute and sponsored by WVSOM’s Center for Rural and Community Health in partnership with the Greenbrier County Health Alliance.
“We thought First Friday would be a great opportunity to engage with community members and build excitement about assisting others in need,” Boggs said. “People here are generous with their time and willing to lend a helping hand, and this program is an easy way to connect volunteers with requests for assistance.”
Greenbrier Community Care Corps volunteers provide services such as companionship, errands, meal preparation, household chores, yardwork and technology assistance for seniors and disabled adults. Volunteers also provide respite care to allow primary caregivers to take a break, run errands or focus on other responsibilities. Virtual and no-contact opportunities are available for volunteers concerned about COVID-19 safety precautions or those who have mobility limitations but are willing to do phone check-ins with a participant.
Volunteers must be 18 or older, pass a background check and participate in a fingerprint screening and training session. Volunteers can schedule their hours of availability and choose tasks at their convenience. Stipends are available on request to help volunteers with gas and other costs. Individuals interested in volunteering can apply at www.bttr.im/9mpb5, call 304-520-5945 or email Greenbrier Community Care Corps@osteo.wvsom.edu.
Greenbrier Community Care Corps services are free for adults over 60, adults with disabilities and their caregivers in need of help with nonmedical tasks and respite care. To register to receive Greenbrier Community Care Corps services, visit www.bttr.im/6lru7, call 304-520-5945 or email Greenbrier Community Care Corps@osteo.wvsom.edu.
