The Greenbrier East Spartans baseball team had an exciting weekend when they split a double-header with the Spring Valley Cardinals.
The Spartans won the first game in exciting fashion 5-4, but suffered a 5-4 defeat in game number two.
A walk-off walk from Henry Goodwin that scored Darris Boswell propelled East to a decisive, dramatic victory.
Spring Mills scored three runs in the third inning, but Greenbrier East still managed to pull out the victory. The big inning for Spring Mills came thanks to a single by Choiniere, a fielder’s choice by Gottholm, and a double by Sites.
Boswell toed the rubber for East. He lasted seven innings, gave up 10 hits and four runs, but struck out nine.
Custer started the game for Spring Mills. Custer allowed five hits and five runs over six innings, striking out eight and walking one.
Chris Heaster went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Spartans in hits. Greenbrier East did not commit a single error in the field.
Spring Mills racked up 10 hits. Choiniere, Sites, and Cover all managed multiple hits for Spring Mills. Choiniere led Spring Mills with three hits in four at bats.
East lost the lead late in a 5-3 defeat to Spring Mills in the nightcap. Spring Mills trailed 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning when Compton tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, and plated two runs.
Greenbrier East Spartans Varsity captured the lead in the second inning when Henry Goodwin singled.
Cover earned the win for Spring Mills. The fireballer lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one.
Gavin Bennett took the loss for East on the mound. Bennett went 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.
Jacob Roshau started the game for Greenbrier East. Roshau allowed three hits and one run in 3.2 innings. He struck out three.
Bennett was the offensive star at the plate for East. He went 3-for-3 and blasted a home run in the first inning over the left field wall.
Spring Mills racked up 11 hits on the day. Compton, Herndon, and Sites all collected multiple hits for Spring Mills. Compton led Spring Mills with three hits in four at bats.
