LEWISBURG (WVDN) – The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans had a beautiful but windy day for two softball games on Saturday, April 2, against the Point Pleasant Black Knights.
In game one, East won 3-2 and, but the nightcap, they suffered a tough 7-5 loss.
The Spartans trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth and had been stymied all day until Gracie Gumm singled home Lily Carola to cut the deficit to 2-1. Three batters later, East’s Brooke Davis slapped a 2-run double to give the Spartans the lead for good at 3-2 in a dramatic conclusion.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Josi Ervin struck out six for East while her counterpart, Kit Stroud sat down five.
Ervin was credited with the victory. The southpaw surrendered two runs on five hits over seven innings and struck out six.
Stroud took the loss for Point Pleasant. Stroud allowed five hits and three runs over six innings, striking out five and walking zero.
Davis led East with two hits in three at bats.
East fell behind 7-0 in game two, but the resiliency they showed to almost battle all the way back had to make the coaching staff happy.
The Spartans scored five runs in the failed comeback on a double by Lindsey Black, a single by Carola, a home run by Black in the seventh and a double by Olivia Plybon in the seventh as well.
Point Pleasant got things started in the first inning when they scored one run on a stolen base.
Victoria Musser got the win for Point Pleasant. The pitcher went 4.2 innings, gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out one. Stroud threw 2.1 innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Carola took the loss for East on the mound.
The Spartans still had a hit party. They totaled 16 hits in the nightcap. Aubrey Glover, Taylor Boswell, Ella Asbury, Carola, and Black all managed multiple hits with Glover leading the way as she went 4-for-4.
Tayah Fetty went 2-for-3 for the Black Knights.
East has a quick turnaround and will travel to Oak Hill on Monday, April 4.
