For the second time this season, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans fell victim to the South Charleston Black Eagles, one of the best teams in the state.
East watched the game slip away early and could not recover after SC went up 7-2 after three innings in an 8-3 loss on Tuesday, Mar. 29.
South Charleston scored on a wild pitch during Savannah Graley’s at-bat in the first inning, a single by Caroline Dunn in the second inning, a single by Emma Falbo in the second inning and a single by Sofia Frye, also in the second frame.
The Spartans struggled to put runs on the board although they did lead 2-1 early on a 2-run single from Olivia Plybon that scored Aubrey Glover and Lindsey Black.
South Charleston pulled away for good with those three runs in the second inning.
The Eagles also scored four runs in the third frame. Graley, Dunn, and Frye each had RBIs to put the game out of reach.
Lexi Scarberry led the Eagles to victory in the pitcher’s circle. She allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings and struck out eight Spartan batters.
Lilly Carola took the loss for Greenbrier East. Carola surrendered eight runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings.
East had something positive to cheer about in the sixth inning when Taylor Boswell smacked her first career home run over the left field fence. Also, Josi Ervin pitched 4.2 innings of really good softball. She struck out four and only gave up one hit in her appearance.
Plybon, Boswell, Black, Glover, and Brooke Davis each collected one hit to lead East.
Dunn led South Charleston at the plate and went 2-for-2.
Plybon knocked in two runs to lead the Spartans.
The Spartans now sit at 3-2 on the young season and will play a double-header this Saturday at home against Point Pleasant.
