CHARMCO (WVDN) – The Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers rolled to a 53-21 Senior Night win over Van in Charmco on Friday night.
Seniors Natalie Agee and Brooke Nutter were recognized with their parents before the game. In a game that got off to a slow start, the Lady Cavaliers found some footing in the second quarter and began to run away toward a sorely needed win.
The first quarter was a cold-shooting affair for both squads. Van got on the scoreboard first with an Emma Wilcox foul shot, but she missed the back end of the one-and-one. Greenbrier West answered when Meagan Poticher rebounded Brooke Nutter’s three-point attempt and laid the ball softly off the glass for a 2-1 lead. Ava Barclay rebounded a Wilcox miss and went coast-to-coast for a layup and a 4-1 advantage with 3:50 left in the first quarter. Alyssa Sampson responded for the Lady Bulldogs with a short-range putback of Rylea Gogas’ layup attempt to draw within one. Wilcox added a free throw to tie the game at 4 with 1:36 remaining but it was the last time it would be that close. Barclay’s layup at the buzzer broke a 4-4 tie to give the Lady Cavaliers a 6-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Preslee Treadway got the Lady Cavaliers started in the second quarter with a turnaround jumper from the foul line. Maddie Fields followed that up with a half-court steal for an uncontested layup. Wilcox spotted up on the right side for a three-point basket that cut the lead to three, but the West girls kept the pressure on Van. Treadway knocked down two free throws for a 12-7 lead and the rim seemed to grow a lid. Treadway kept pulling down offensive rebounds but the putbacks just would not fall. After four consecutive misses, Treadway slipped inside the Bulldog rebounders for a stick back of a Poticher missed free throw for a 14-7 lead. Poticher blocked Sampson’s long two-point attempt into the hands of Nutter who promptly went the length of the court for another West layup.
Treadway got a takeaway on the inbound and fed Raelyn Palmer who was fouled by Gogas. Palmer sank the front of the two-shot foul but was tagged with a personal foul after she missed the second and defended Gogas who was driving down the left side. Palmer atoned for her foul when she fed Fields for a left-wing three as the Cavaliers steadily pulled away from the Bulldogs. Poticher snuck in from the backside for a layup on a baseline inbound pass and got fouled by Jazmyn Gibson, sinking the free-throw for a 23-7 lead. Palmer would add two more free-throws to as the Cavaliers outscored Van 19-3 in the second quarter.
Poticher got the Cavaliers started in the third quarter with a nice baseline move around Van’s Autumn Estep for a teardrop jumper. Estep answered with a layup of her own. Nutter and Treadway would hit back-to-back baskets, and Palmer would hit another one-and-one front end foul shot. Barclay took her turn at the charity stripe and hit both for a 34-11 Cavalier advantage. The cold shooting at the rim would rear its head once more as the Cavalier struggled to knock down putbacks giving the Bulldogs a faint hope to stick around. Fields would kill that momentum momentarily with a West three, but the Bulldogs would go on to outscore West 13-12 in the quarter. Wilcox had 8 of the Van points in the third stanza.
With only eight players on the roster for Van, West used the fourth quarter and some Bulldog foul trouble to pull away. Treadway scored seven of her game-high 17 points to start the Cavalier fourth quarter. Barclay swiped a midcourt pass for an uncontested lay-in and the route was on. Sophomore Hannah Sweet would enter the game and drill a three-pointer. Van would get its lone point of the fourth quarter on a Gibson foul shot before Nutter closed out the night with four points and a 53-21 win.
Treadway earned Oldie’s 93 WKCJ Rick Allen Nationwide Insurance Player of the Game honors with a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double. Treadway also went 2-2 from the foul line. Poticher chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds. Abigail Thomas pulled down nine rebounds for the Cavaliers.
