Beckley Dance Theater is offering a free Creative Movement class for children between three and seven years of age. In this class, instructors will demonstrate the correlation between dance and the cardiovascular system.
The class is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19, 2 through 3:30 p.m. All children are welcome to attend the Creative Movement Class, regardless of if they are Beckley Dance Theater students or not. Dance attire is not required.
A study, published in the June 2016 edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, tackled the question of the long-term effects of dance on cardiovascular health versus other forms of exercise. While the study did not definitively prove that dance leads to lower mortality, it did determine that dancing may provide bouts of higher-intensity exercise and stress-relieving social connections.
Additionally, a study found in the National Library of Medicine concluded that “moderate-intensity dancing was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease mortality to a greater extent than walking.”
Founded in 1964, Beckley Dance Theater has aided many students in starting their careers. Since the studio’s beginning, students have gone on to join 18 different dance companies throughout America. This list includes the New York City Ballet. Students have also become teachers in both private studios and the university level. Other achievements include Broadway, movies and television.
