Dear Recycle Lady,
What about Christmas cards? Can they be recycled? I Love Christmas Cards
Dear I Love Christmas Cards,
Yes, Christmas cards can be recycled, but some decisions must be made first. Any glitter, ribbons, foil, or felt must be removed as these items will not recycle. Glossy cards go in the magazine/slicks bin and plain paper cards go in the office paper bin. There are also some options to recycling that you might consider. Two websites, https://earthfriendlytips.com/ epic-ideas-to-recycle- christmas-cards and https://www.shelterness.com/ ideas-to-recycle-Christmas- cards have some wonderful ideas for repurposing/recycling Christmas cards. St. Jude’s Ranch for Children accepts the fronts of Christmas cards, and other occasion cards, to be used as craft projects for the children. Due to copyright laws, St. Jude’s cannot accept Hallmark, American Greetings or Disney cards. All other cards are acceptable. When choosing cards for next year, consider using seeded Christmas cards that have wildflower seeds embedded in 100% recycled paper. The cards can be soaked in water, torn up and planted in a thin layer of soil. A great start for summer wildflowers! These seeded cards are eco-friendly, zero waste Christmas cards and can be purchased at www.FTO.com. Other eco-friendly cards made from recycled paper are available.
As Christmas rapidly approaches, many boxes of gifts and goodies are arriving. Please remember to remove all Styrofoam, peanuts, bubble wrap and plastic wrappings before you recycle the boxes as they are contaminants and will not recycle. Also, please do not put wrapping paper in the recycle bins as the Recycling Center is unable to recycle any wrapping paper. Thanks for helping out with this. We greatly appreciate all you do to make the Recycling Center be efficient, clean and sustainable.
Dear Recycle Lady,
What does one do with a live Christmas tree once Christmas is over? Tree Hugger
Dear Tree Hugger,
Good question. Unfortunately, there are not many choices available here for disposing of your live Christmas tree. These trees can be used to create a safe place for feeding birds and providing nesting for them. They can also be put into ponds to create a feeding area for fish. If you live in the area where your trash is picked up by Greenbrier Valley Solid Waste, your tree will be picked up when your trash is picked up. Please note, Greenbrier VALLEY Solid Waste DISPOSAL, and Greenbrier COUNTY Solid Waste AUTHORITY are two distinct organizations. Greenbrier VALLEY Solid Waste Disposal a privately owned trash pickup business and Greenbrier COUNTY Solid Waste Authority is a branch of WV state government that oversees the landfill and recycling. Need trash pickup or a dumpster? The Greenbrier VALLEY Solid Waste Disposal is the one to call. Questions about recycling or the landfill? The Greenbrier COUNTY Solid Waste AUTHORITY is the one to call.
The Greenbrier Recycling Center and I send you best wishes and much joy. We greatly appreciate all your questions, comments and encouragement. Please keep them coming in 2022.
