An amendment has been made to the proposed Congressional district map originally submitted by the West Virginia Senate Committee on Redistricting as part of Senate Bill 3033.
According to Senate Redistricting Committee Lead Charles Trump (R-Morgan, 15), who spoke before the Senate during their special session on Wednesday, Oct. 13, the amended map is not that different from the original map proposed on Oct. 11.
In the original map titled “Trump-Congressional Map #11” Pendleton County would have been included in the northern Congressional district while Ritchie County would have been included in the southern district.
The amended map “Trump 8,” now up for final approval, places Pendleton County in the southern Congressional district and Ritchie County in the northern district.
Trump stated that the county switch creates equitable population distribution more so that the original map.
“I believe this bill that will draw West Virginia’s two Congressional districts meets the Constitutional requirements of both the United States Constitution and the West Virginia Constitution,” Trump said.
As the proposed map currently stands, the northern district will house 897,469 residents. The southern congressional district will contain 896,067 residents. Both districts have a .09 percent deviation.
Continued discussion of the map will take place on Oct. 14.
