Greenbrier Valley Fair Will Continue Over To Saturday Night
Not discouraged by the rain of Tuesday and Wednesday, the fair association officials have announced that the Great Greenbrier Valley Fair will continue over Saturday night in all of its many features.
Death Of Movie Star
Rudolph Valentino, celebrated moving picture star, died about noon on August 24th in a New York City hospital following an operation performed several days before for appendicitis. He was a native of Italy and came to America in 1913. He was several times married.
Dahlia Show
The Greenbrier Valley Dahlia Show will be held in Carnegie Hall, September 16 and 17. This show is held annually for the benefit of the Sunday School Library of the Old Stone Church. All those who have dahlias are urgently requested to display them. Prizes are offered for every class and kind of dahlia.

Populaires To Play For Autumn Ball
The Populaires, currently featured in the Greenbrier Hotel’s Old White Club, will play for the second in a series of dances being sponsored by the Holy Name Society of the Catholic Church. This dance will be in the White Sulphur High School gym on September 10 from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Dress will be optional.
C & O Diesel Engines
Nearly all of the Chesapeake and Ohio railway’s passenger trains in the Chesapeake district will be powered by diesel locomotives by the end of this year, the C and O announced. Dieselization of the area began Friday when the crack George Washington left Cincinnati for Washington, D. C.
Annual State Fair
The 27th annual West Virginia State Fair closed amid a blaze of fireworks Saturday night. Officials said tentative counts placed the Wednesday turn out at about 53,000 persons and the Thursday attendance at 51,000. Pre-fair hopes were for a total attendance in excess of 250,000 for the week long event.

Memorial Services Conducted by Dr. William Benfield
Dr. William Benfield, senior minister of the First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, conducted memorial services Sunday afternoon and evening at the State Fair Grandstand, honoring the late Ross Tuckwiller and the late Thomas Sydenstricker, both of whom devoted much of their life to state fair duties.
Bringing Back Days Gone By
One of the most interesting attractions at the 52nd West Virginia State Fair was the construction of a two story log house on the grounds. Starting from scratch on opening day, Jack Kilburn and Red Heard, together with their crew of workmen, hacked out an attractive, livable dwelling using nothing more than logs, hard work, and ingenuity. The two-story dwelling reminiscent of log cabins built by early American settlers, added a true bi-centennial flavor to the fair.

Liebendorfer Selected Emerging Entrepreneur Of The Year
The national accounting firm of Ernst and Young announced that Mark Liebendorfer and his company, The Country Vinter of West Virginia, has been selected as the 2001 Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year for West Virginia. Liebendorfer’s business is a fine wine distributorship, and carries over 2,400 selections from around the world.
Greenbrier County Commissioners Continue To Hoard Bed Tax Money
County Commissioner Steven Malcomb reported the county has received a total of $552,457 from The Greenbrier as a result of the hotel/motel tax through June of the current calendar year. According to state code, the county and the CVB each get 50% of the proceeds from the hotel/motel tax. Kim Cooper, executive director of the Greenbrier County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said there has been some delay in receipt of those payments, and told the commissioners some “bugs” in the process need to be worked out in order to transfer the money more efficiently from the county to the CVB.
GVT Named “Jewel Of The Hills’ By Manchin
Greenbrier area locals have known it for years. The Greenbrier Valley Theatre in Lewisburg is a gem. However, the rest of the state was let in on the secret when Secretary of State Joe Manchin III visited West Virginia’s first and only year-round professional theatre to honor it with a proclamation designating it a “Jewel of the Hills.” Shown receiving the proclamation from Secretary Manchin is Greenbrier Valley Theatre board member Ann Benedict.
