Lindsey Renee Gabbert of Alderson has been awarded a President’s Scholarship for the 1996-97 academic year at Marietta College.
She is the daughter of Mike and Brenda Gabbert and is a 1996 graduate of Greenbrier East High School.

The Alvon United Methodist Church dedicated its new fellowship and picnic shelter on August 11. The shelter was named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore and Margaret Boggs, who are long time members of the church.

Keith Poore of Snowshoe has been accepted and will attend Burke Mountain Academy for the junior year of high school in Vermont for the 1996-97 school year.

The American Board of Opticianry and the National Contact Lens Examiners have announced that Shelli Ervin of Seneca Opticians in Fairlea recently passed the National Competency Examination.

Gov. Gaston Caperton has named Brownie Hayes Dodson of Maxwelton a Distinguished West Virginian.
She has nearly 60 years of teaching experience and is the oldest active teacher in West Virginia. She teaches math at Frankford Elementary School.

Air Force Airman Dale R. Pence has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
He is the son of Barbara E. Level of Ronceverte and is a 1993 graduate of Greenbrier East High School.

Heather Dawn Fogus, daughter of Kenneth and Darlene Fogus of White Sulphur Springs, will appear in the 30th annual edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students.
She is a junior at Greenbrier East High School.

Jim Gallagher, general manager, presented 10-year pins to employees Aaron McCormick, Gloria McClung, and David Green at the annual company picnic of Greenbrier Valley Limousine.

Garieann Cunningham of Lewisburg has been awarded a President’s Scholarship for the 1996-97 academic year at Marietta College.
She is the daughter of Mark and Marsha Cunningham and is a graduate of Greenbrier East High School.

J. Kincaid, district manager of Southern West Virginia Wendy’s, purchased the Light Weight Champion Steer at the 4-H sale at the West Virginia State Fair on August 18. The blue ribbon steer was raised by John Tuckwiller.
John Tuckwiller is the son of Matthew and Lynn Tuckwiller of Lewisburg.

50 Years Ago…
Miss Vivian Crane was among the degree recipients at the summer commencement exercises of the University of Virginia.
She is a former principal and teacher at Rupert School.

Patricia J. Wise of Ronceverte and Deborah Ann Gibson of White Sulphur Springs are among the 65 West Virginia University sophomores who will compose the entering class of the School of Nursing for the fall term.

Fifty years ago this month, Paul Legg accepted a position with the Pioneer Drug Store and has been serving the public in this capacity in a dignified and unselfish manner ever since.

Lowell E. Johnson has received his Doctor of Education degree in reading and psychology from West Virginia University.
He is a former teacher and counselor at Lewisburg High School and guidance counselor at Greenbrier East High School.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave E. Johnson of Williamsburg.

Virgil W. Hanshew Jr. has been hired as a graduate assistant teacher in the department of speech at Marshall University.
He is the son of Virgil W. Hanshew Sr. of Lewisburg.

Airman John W. Beard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Beard of Lewisburg, has received his first U.S. Air Force duty assignment after completing basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. He has been assigned to a unit of the Air Training Command at Sheppard AFB, Texas.

Miss Alee Jean Dolinger of Rainelle was a member of the graduating class of the Charleston General Hospital School of Nursing in ceremonies held a Morris Harvey College.

Evjan Giamour Gloria, a 4-year-old registered Holstein in the head tested for Clayborne D. and Virginia C. Campbell of Sinks Grove, has produced a noteworthy record of 17,630 pounds of milk and 672 pounds of butterfat in 305 days.
August 29, 1946
75 Years Ago…
John Henson and Henry Loudermilk cut down a walnut “bee” tree on the John Young farm west of Lewisburg and found a store of 40 pounds of honey.

On the fairgrounds on Wednesday, a daughter was born to a woman in the secretary’s office, attended by a physician hastily summoned. It was suggested the baby be named “Merry Fair.”

Fred B. Reynolds of Ronceverte has purchased the pool room building and residence known as the Grace Patton property in Alderson from C.H. Bivens. It is reported that Reynolds will establish a cleaning and pressing plant at the site.

Forrest Lee Suttle, son of Mrs. Una Suttle of Ronceverte, has recently been discharged from the Navy at Bainbridge, Md., where he was stationed for 11 months as a yoeman.
On September 1, he will resume work at the Ronceverte A&P store, where he was employed before entering the service.

100 Years Ago…
Mr. Grady King of Alvon, who is road supervisor for Anthony’s Creek District, has had for some time a crew of men working on the district roads, which are beginning to show much improvement.

The cornerstone of the new Falling Spring District high school will be laid with elaborate ceremonies on Monday, September 5.

Len H. was arrested at White Sulphur Springs and placed in jail in Covington, Va.
A few days before, Lawrence H. and Rodney H. were arrested and lodged in the Covington jail on the charge of holding up a truck at the point of a gun at the foot of Little Alleghany Mountain and taking a new tire off the truck to replace the flat one on the automobile they were driving.
As the officers were on their way to arrest Lawrence and Rodney H., they encountered Arch H. on the White Sulphur road and found a gallon and a half of whiskey in his car and took him to the Covington jail.
The car on which the stolen tire was put belonged to Len H.
