ELKINS, W.Va. (WVDN) – The Monongahela National Forest is planning a prescribed fire for the Lockridge Unit on the Marlinton-White Sulphur District. The planned burn area will total 2,439 acres and occur on Wednesday, April 8, and Thursday, April 9, 2026.

Prescribed fire is a critical tool to help manage healthier forests, and to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. The location of the Lockridge Unit prescribed fire can be found on the attached map.

What to Expect

  • Timing and Duration: The burn is expected to take place over 2 days. Active burning typically occurs during daylight hours when conditions are most favorable. Weather conditions are monitored closely for ideal timing.
  • Smoke: Smoke may be visible from your area. We plan burns to direct smoke away from populated areas as much as possible.
  • Visible Activity: You may see fire crews, vehicles, equipment, and flames near the burn project area. Helicopters, which we will utilize for prescribed burn ignition operations, may also be seen overhead.

Stay informed about scheduled prescribed fires through the forest website and social media channels.
