River Now Protected
Poisonous waste from tanneries no longer will jeopardize the fish of Greenbrier River, it was said at the offices of the State Game and Fish Commission. The new Travers filtration system that has been installed by the Union Tannery of Marlinton wasput into actual operation last week.
Wiped Out Debt
Rainelle lodge, Knights of Pythias, celebrating recently the burning the last of the bonds issued 13 years ago for the construction of its lodge home. Over 150 attended the banquet and speechmaking celebrating the occasion.
World War Losses
France lost a million and half men during the World War, according to official figures just compiled by the government. A third of the slain were farmers it is said. One man in every 28 in France was killed, the report shows. In Germany the ratio was one out of 35, and in England one out of 66.

Approve Instrument Flight Training
Approval for instrument training has been received by the Greenbrier Airport School, Charles O Take, Jr., former TWA overseas pilot and operator of the school said. The school, one of two in West Virginia approved to train pilots in instrument flying, has the sanction of the Civil Aeronautics Administration and the Veteran’s Administration to give this training.
Firemen Helped
The Greenbrier Valley Bank of Lewisburg recently gave the Lewisburg Volunteer Fire Department $100 as a token of their appreciation for the splendid work that the firemen did in fighting the disastrous fire that threatened the business section of Lewisburg on January 26.
Red Cross
Al McHale, who has accepted the drive announced that Munir Yarid, chairman of the 1951 membership has accepted the chairmanship of Lewisburg. It is remembered that Mr. Yarid served the Red Cross in a similar capacity during the 1950 drive and that it was due largely to his efforts that Lewisburg made the creditable showing it did.

Hechler Won’t Have Limousines
Don’t expect to see Ken Hechler riding around in a fancy car in West Virginia if he’s elected governor this year. So fond of his famed little red jeep Is Hechler, that the ninth-term congressman vowed to do away with plush limousines and park a four-wheeled vehicle in the garage of the governor’s mansion.
New River A Standoff Issue
Governor James E. Holshouser, Jr. says he does not expect President Ford to take a stand on New River before the Department of Interior decides whether or not to recommend preservation of the stream. The Interior Department is considering a proposal to include 26.5 miles of the river, considered one of the oldest in the world, in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Inclusion in the system would block construction of the Blue Ridge Dam project which would flood some 40,000 acres in Virginia and North Carolina.

Nobel prize winning Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn said in a new book today the Soviet Communist system was the most cruel and barbarous regime ever created by man on this earth. The exiled author made the charge in the third and final volume of his work, “The Gulag Archipelago,” in which he describes the life of millions of men he says are herded into Soviet prison camps.

BZA Upholds Ruling On Vinyl Siding Request
The Lewisburg Board of Zoning Appeals has upheld a ruling denying permission for a city couple to cover their historic home’s wood siding with vinyl. The BZA ruled that the city’s Historic Landmarks Commission’s decision to turn down the request by Robert and Karen Birchfield was not arbitrary and
capricious.
Structural Systems Continues Work On Western Greenbrier Site
Having been in operation for around one month, Structural Systems, Inc., now has approximately 12 employees working at its Greenbrier County site. Dick Nevi, executive director of the Greenbrier Valley Economic Development Corporation, said the company will employ 75 to 100 people after three years, depending on demand for its products.
Meadow River Garden Club Discusses Future Plantings
The Meadow River Garden Club held their monthly meeting at the home of Elda DiMasio. Connie May served as co-hostess. President Polly Cook reported that shrubbery for Pomeroy Park has been reserved. The club is going to buy two small trees for the park. She reported that she had planted the bulbs at the Rainelle Post Office.
