PUBLIC NOTICE – RECEIPT OF VOLUNTARY REMEDIATION APPLICATION
PUBLIC NOTICE NO.: VRP #26006
NEWSPAPER: West Virginia Daily News
PUBLIC NOTICE DATE: February 4, 2026
New River Gorge Regional Development Authority submitted an application to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) to participate in a voluntary environmental cleanup at the former Rainelle Dump site under the Voluntary Remediation and Redevelopment Act. The site is located at Snake Island Road, Rainelle, Fayette County, West Virginia, and is approximately 4.8 acres in size.
The former Rainelle Dump facility was formerly used as a municipal landfill for the Town of Rainelle beginning in 1970 and until the Greenbrier County Landfill was constructed in the 1980s. Contaminants of concern at the site include metals and semi-volatile organic compounds. The planned future use of the site is for access to the Meadow River Rail Trail, Meadow River, and camping.
The Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) at the WVDEP is currently negotiating a Voluntary Remediation Agreement with the applicant to address environmental conditions associated with the site. The agreement includes provisions for assessing potential environmental contaminants; evaluating human health and ecological risks; establishing remediation standards; and, performing any cleanup necessary to meet the standards. At project conclusion, the applicant will submit a Final Report, documenting that all work is complete.
