CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – Supreme Court Justice Thomas Ewing filed, today, for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. Justice Ewing was appointed by Governor Patrick Morrisey in August after the retirement of Justice Beth Walker. The election for the remainder of Justice Walker’s unexpired term is being held during the May 2026 primary.
“It is an honor of a lifetime to serve our great state as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Appeals. I look forward to meeting with folks all around the state to make my case why I should continue to serve on the court. As the son of a coal miner and postmaster, I have learned the value of faith, family, and hard work from my parents, and I will share that experience with the voters,” said Justice Thomas Ewing. “Because the Supreme Court judges the work of judges, I believe that it is important for the Supreme Court bench to have a perspective and leadership of an experienced circuit court judge.”
Justice Ewing was originally appointed as circuit judge (15th Judicial Circuit) by then Governor Jim Justice on December 7, 2018, and earned election in 2020 and re-election in 2024. In addition to his experience as a circuit court judge, Justice Ewing brings extensive experience as an attorney with the law firm of Kay, Casto & Chaney, PLLC from 2004 until his appointment to the bench in 2018, culminating as the managing member of its Fayetteville office from 2015 to 2018. In 2025, Justice Ewing was recognized as a West Virginia Bar Foundation Fellow.
Justice Ewing was born, raised, and educated in West Virginia. He’s a native of Fayette County, grew up in Hico, and graduated from Midland Trail High School. Justice Ewing has been married to his wife, Mindy, for 26 years, and they have four children and two grandchildren. He and his family attend Grace Baptist Church in Fayetteville, West Virginia.
