Trouble Makers
Governor Gore is having some trouble with the gross sales tax. That is, some who do not like it are giving him a great deal of trouble about it. While the gross sales tax is not Governor Gore’s pet measure, to meet the appropriations made by the legislature and the expenses of the state, the revenue it produces is absolutely necessary and the governor must fight for it until another way is found to get that revenue, or the legislature can find a way to retrench by that much.
Greenbrier Takes Off Morgantown Honors
Greenbrier County took away all honors in the high team and individual scoring in livestock judging at Morgantown during the Farmers’ Week competitions held by West Virginia University, Edgar H. McLaughlin coming out first in the individual high scoring.
Camp Do-Little Annual Banquet
On January 9, the thirteenth annual banquet of Camp Do-Little was held in Ronceverte at the Business Men’s Club rooms. This annual affair was one of the prominent features of the post-holiday season and was attended by thirty members and friends of the camp. Camp Do-Little was organized in 1914 and is the oldest social organization in Ronceverte.

Heart Attack Fatal For Mr. W. H. Gum
William Harmon Gum, 80 years, 7 months and 4 days, a prominent retired merchant in White Sulphur Springs died suddenly at his home after a heart attack. He was a former member of the County School Board, the City Council, and was elected to the State Legislature in 1934.
Large Egg
F. E. Ripley of Lewisburg brought us an egg that weighed 4 ounces and measured 6 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches. It was laid by a White Leghorn hen.
Court House Closed
The boiler that heats the court house went kerflunk on Sunday, causing the closing of the building on Monday.

State Hit With First Snow Storm
West Virginia’s worst snow storm of the season dumped a fresh blanket of snow across the mountains and wind-whipped drifts were stacked as high as six feet in some remote pockets. Snow depths measured from a trace in place such as Iaeger, McDowell County, to a whopping 21 inches at Thomas, Tucker County.
Plane Lost Near Snowshoe, 50 Searching
The search for two airplanes missing in the rugged snow- covered mountains of northeastern West Virginia was to be resumed full force today. The search for an airplane carrying two pilots in Tucker County, picked up steam Wednesday night but cooled around midnight while authorities sought to
determine if a possible path was passable to the vicinity of an emergency signal emitted earlier in the evening. The report of a possible second aircraft downed in the same section sent authorities on another search.
Pence Springs Manufacturing Plant Forms Union
The long-awaited date for the forming of the Pence Springs Manufacturing Plant Local Union and the election and installation of officers was realized at a dinner meeting in the Captain’s Lounge in Alderson. Employees now under Union have been given the benefits of paid holidays, vacation with pay, insurance and equal rights.

Appalachian By Design Receives Grant From Verizon
Verizon West Virginia recently awarded Appalachian By Design, Inc., of Lewisburg a $4,000 grant. The funding is in support of Appalachian By Design’s effort to reinvent cottage industry through technology. Since 1994, ABD has been building a machine knitting industry in mid-Appalachia, and communication technology has been an essential part of the development. Currently, 17 people in the production network are “on-line.”
Throttle Throbs Car Club Establishes Scholarship Fund
The Throttle Throbs Car Club of Greenbrier County has established a memorial scholarship fund in memory of Greg Carter. Greg was a Greenbrier County fireman who lost his life in the line of duty. This year, the club is able to award four $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors at both Greenbrier East and West.
Blackbears 4-H Sponsors “Bus Safety” Contest
The Williamsburg Blackbears 4-H Club sponsored a poster contest with the theme “Bus Safety” for the third grade class at Williamsburg Elementary School. Winners received ribbons and crayon/glue packs. Winners were (from left): first place, Joshua McFerrin; second place, Joshua Acacio; and third place, Joshua Crookshanks.
