ST. ALBANS- Since a 74-70 season opening win over John Marshall, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans have beaten every opponent by at least 12 points, and honestly it never seems like the score is that close.

On Monday night, Jan. 19, the trend continued when the Lady Spartans hammered the St. Albans Lady Dragons 64-28 in a contest that East controlled from beginning to end.

The Spartans jumped ahead quickly 5-0 on a bucket from Ava Workman and a long 3 from Kennedy Stewart. A little later in the opening quarter, Stewart drained another shot from downtown, and Mackenna McClure capped the first quarter scoring with a basket, and after one, Greenbrier East led 14-8.

It took a couple minutes for east to get on the board in the second after missing their first four field goal attempts, but a free throw and another score from Workman broke the trend. Kayla Waller also scored and a couple possessions later, Stewart hit another trifecta and East led 24-11 midway through the quarter. Two consecutive 3s from Workman and Stewart, and a 2-pointer by the former, closed out the half in a big way for East as they took a 32-16 lead into halftime.

Two 3-pointers, one from Waller and the other from Workman, opened the third quarter scoring for the Lady Spartans. Maddie Baker also came up big with five points in the period and yet another 3 from Stewart finished off the quarter.

After three, East led 50-26.

East unloaded the bench in the fourth and continued to get reserves some valuable minutes due to the score and they cruised easily to their 14th win of the season (14-0).

Workman led East with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Stewart netted 17 (5-9 from 3) and had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Waller and Baker also reached double figures with 10 points apiece and McClure had 5 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Trinity Austin-Russell led the Red Dragons with 10 points.

The Spartans played the game without starter Sandy Banton, who suffered a broken nose in last weekend’s win over James River (VA).

Greenbrier East is back home this Saturday night, Jan. 24 for a showdown with Nitro.
