Charleston, W.Va. (WVDN) — In February, Charleston Ballet presents a compelling showing of mixed repertory, TRADITION / INNOVATION—on Feb. 27–28, at 7:30 p.m., at the Charleston Coliseum Theater. This performance showcases the company’s wide range of talents, highlighting classical works that honor the past alongside contemporary choreography that propels ballet into the future.
Audiences will see Follow the Leader, an excerpt from the ballet GAMES, performed as a standalone presentation, a lively and imaginative contemporary work choreographed by K. R. Pauley and set to Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major. Playful and musically driven, the choreography translates Ravel’s iconic score into dynamic movement rich with energy.
TRADITION / INNOVATION also features two solo works danced by Charleston Ballet soloists and several classical pas de deux performed by guest dancers from the Sarasota Cuban Ballet, offering audiences a glimpse of international artistry and collaborative exchange. Additional works round out the mixed bill, providing variety and contrast.
This mixed repertory performance promises an engaging evening of dance that celebrates tradition, embraces innovation, and invites audiences to experience ballet in all of its evolving forms.

The Charleston Ballet, the official West Virginia State Ballet, was formed in 1956 by Andre Van Damme. Mr. Van Damme achieved great success in his native Belgium as the first star dancer with the Royal Opera. Celebrating its 70th season, the company has enriched the cultural life of the state with hundreds of traditional and original ballets. Kim Pauley became artistic director in 1989, becoming one of the very few women directors nationally of a regional ballet. The company has a reputation of high-quality professional performances, artistic integrity, and a strong social conscience.
