Charleston, W.Va. (WVDN) — The West Virginia Democratic Party today expressed its deepest condolences on the passing of former West Virginia State Senator Larry Edgell, a devoted public servant, educator, veteran, and lifelong advocate for West Virginia’s children and communities.

Senator Edgell represented the 2nd Senatorial District from 1998 to 2014, serving with distinction as a Democratic member of the West Virginia Senate. During his tenure, he was widely respected for his steady leadership, integrity, and commitment to public education. In 2013, he was appointed President Pro Tempore of the Senate.

Senator Edgell dedicated his life to education. A lifelong educator, he brought the values of the classroom to the Senate—believing deeply that expanding educational opportunity was essential to building a stronger future for West Virginia. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy, a testament to his lifelong commitment to service.

Senator Edgell resided in New Martinsville, West Virginia, with his beloved wife, Cecilia. Together, they raised two children, Eva and Josh, of whom he was immensely proud.

“Larry Edgell exemplified what it means to be a public servant,” said West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin. “He was guided by a deep sense of duty—to his students, his constituents, and his state. As a teacher, a veteran, and a legislator, Larry dedicated his life to lifting others up and expanding opportunity for West Virginians. Our hearts are with Cecilia, Eva, Josh, and the entire Edgell family during this difficult time.”

Former Senate President Jeff Kessler, who served alongside Edgell and appointed him President Pro Tempore, reflected on his colleague’s leadership and character.

“It is with profound sadness to hear that my dear friend and colleague, Senator Larry J. Edgell passed away on Christmas Eve. He selflessly served the Second Senatorial District and the entire state. With a lifetime of teaching experience, he was a valued member of the Education and Finance Committees. He served with distinction as President Pro Tem of the Senate. He was a man of great integrity who was trusted and admired by both sides of the aisle.

His infectious smile lit up every room he entered and his dedicated work improved the lives of all he touched. My heartfelt condolences to his wife, Ceci, children Eva and Josh and the entire family.”

The West Virginia Democratic Party honors Senator Edgell’s legacy of service and extends its sincere sympathy to his family, friends, former students, and all those whose lives were touched by his compassion and leadership.
