LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – According to a criminal complaint, on Dec. 11, an officer with the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department got a call in regards to an open 911 line in the vicinity of Sunset Circle in Lewisburg. The dispatcher reportedly advised the officer that they could hear a male yelling and screaming that they would “blow someone’s brains out.” The dispatcher also said they could hear two females and a male inside the residence. At one point, a woman allegedly told one of the males to “put the gun down.” The officer was also advised by dispatch of the possibility of a small child being in the residence.
The officer arrived on scene and, along with other officers, used loudspeakers on their vehicles to try and get the people out of the house. The exact location of the suspect was unknown. In a short while, dispatch was able to make contact with one of the women in the house. Dispatch said she was going to exit through the front door.
According to the criminal complaint, the woman said the male, later identified as Nathaniel Clevenger, was beating her, and she didn’t know if he still had the gun. She reportedly said the other woman told her Clevenger was out on the back porch.
The officer went around back to a position of good cover and good sight over Clevenger with the department-issued long guns. Two officers got a visual of Clevenger on the back porch. An officer told Clevenger to show his hands. The criminal complaint notes that he then asked Clevenger where the gun was. Clevenger allegedly looked down at his left side and said it was in his pocket. Officers secured Clevenger and placed him in handcuffs.
In a statement that was captured on an officer’s body-worn camera, the victim said she was asleep when Clevenger started to hit her. She then yelled for a family member and tried to go to her room. It was at that point that Clevenger allegedly grabbed the gun.
According to the criminal complaint, once Clevenger grabbed the gun, he told the victim he was going to kill her. When the victim was asked if the gun was pointed at her, she reportedly responded by saying it was placed right against her head. She then explained she had to hang up the call to 911.
Clevenger was searched and put in an officer’s vehicle for transport to the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department. The gun was run by one of the officers and secured. Clevenger was processed and taken to Southern Regional Jail.
At the time of publishing, Clevenger is not listed as an inmate at SRJ.
