Wet And Dry
Two streams of prohibition bills, the larger wet and the lesser dry, flowed into the hopper of the national House of Representatives. The wet proposal ranged from measures for appeal of the 18 th amendment and the Volstead Act to legalization of light beer and mild wines. The dry ones, all
designated to strengthen enforcement of the prohibition amendment, covered a similarly wide range, embracing bootleggers and diplomates and many in between.
Sale Of Pence Springs
The Pence Springs Hotel and the 290 acres of surrounding land was sold a public auction in front of the courthouse to John W. Johnson of Alderson for the sum of $77,000. The purchase of the resort by Mr. Johnson gives the assurance that it will continue to be open to the public.
Looking For A Tall Man
Justice McVey, of Ansted, was in Fayetteville seeking a tall man last seen on the Herndon farm near Hico early in the morning with a rooster under his arm and going through a briar patch. He is one of about 40 participants in the big cock fight who has not settled with the justice. Thirty paid $10 each and the owner of the barn where the association held its meeting was assessed a fine of $100 and sent to jail for six months.

To Get Christmas Turkeys
The Meadow River Lumber Company of Rainelle will for their fourth consecutive year distribute turkeys to their employees for Christmas. Turkeys will reach approximately 525 employees on Dec. 22 and 23, including the woods camps.
Wild Turkey Kill
The wild turkey kill in West Virginia the past season as tabulated up to November 29 by the conservation commission was less than half of last year’s bag. With a few reports expected still to come in, the total stood at 314, which compared with 749 for the 1949 season. Unfavorable hunting
conditions caused by extremely dry woods were believe by the commission to have been an important factor in the small kill.
Christmas Tree Farm
There are many places in this section of West Virginia where a Christmas tree plantation will pay rich dividends in a few short years. Farmers who have idle acres on their farms should give serious consideration to putting this land to good use by planting Christmas trees on it. Most conifers will grow on the very poorest sites thus making them ideal for planting on eroded spots and poor soil.

First Woman To Be Named Station Manager Assigned To Greenbrier Valley Airport
The first woman to be named Station Manager in the history of Piedmont Airlines has been assigned to the Greenbrier Valley Airport “I’m overwhelmed by the reception I’ve had,” said Miss Jean Hope Dial. If she expected any resentment over her assignment, she was wrong. Not only Piedmont employees, but other airport personnel seem proud of the “first to be named” distinction she brought to the valley and recognize that with her record in the Customer Service field, she has received a well-deserved promotion.
Woodland School Of Photography To Open
A dream will come true for Marshall Booker, when Woodland School of Photography opens its doors to its first class of aspiring professionals on January 12. Booker, who owns and operates Club Photos at The Greenbrier as well as YellowBird Photo Service in the village, has long recognized the need for
photographers who possess more than technical knowledge of their trade. Instructors at the Woodland School will include, in addition to Booker, his wife, Niki, and Nancy Raspberry, a member of the Club Photos staff.
Two School Records Broken By Wrestlers
Two school records were broken at the Spartan’s wrestling match with Shady Springs. Dexter Brackenrich, wrestling in the 98 lb. class, pinned his opponent in 9 seconds, breaking Fairchild’s record of 17 seconds. Also breaking a school record was John Holiday, 145 class, who won by major decision, 22-4. The is the greatest point span on record for the Spartans.

Felons Barred From Practicing Law In WV
The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has adopted a new rule that bars convicted felons from being admitted to practice law in the state. Previously, applicants seeking initial admission to practice in West Virginia only had to exhibit “good moral character and fitness,” in addition to being at least 18 years of age and meeting educational and bar exam or reciprocity requirements.
WVSOM Students Impact Health In Rural Communities
They dot our state’s landscape. Tiny towns with names like Cabin Creek, Union or Scarbro. They are rural communities that, for one reason or another suffer, from a lack of medical professionals. Another thing they have in common is that they are exactly the kind of towns the founders of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) had in mind when they created WVSOM in 1974 to help meet the critical need for doctors in rural areas of the state. WVSOM students and graduates are having a big impact on the quality of health care in small, rural communities all across the state.
Westvaco Increases Pledge To United Way
Corporate citizenship and a high level of community awareness are what makes Westvaco, located in Rupert, such a tremendous success and asset for the Greenbrier Valley United Way. For two weeks in the month of October, Westvaco diligently raised $3,428 from its 39 employees, which will be
matched dollar for dollar by the Westvaco corporation.
