Charleston, W.Va (WVDN) – As more than a half-million West Virginians prepare to travel home to visit family this holiday season, Bridging Resources West Virginia (BRWV) is reminding adult children and grandchildren to be mindful of the changes that may have occurred in their aging loved ones’ lives. Whether it’s been months or a year since the last visit, things may look a little different this year.
Bridging Resources West Virginia’s Home for the Holidays campaign encourages families to take a closer look at how their loved ones are managing at home, ensuring they’re safe and well cared for.
“Traveling home can be exciting, but it can also bring surprises, especially when we’re seeing our loved ones after some time apart,” said Christina Jumper, Project Coordinator of Bridging Resources West Virginia. “This holiday season may look a little different. Subtle changes can indicate that they may need a little extra support to live comfortably and independently.”
Here are 10 things to watch for when visiting your aging loved ones this holiday season:
- Changes in Mobility: Are they having trouble with movements they used to do easily, such as walking or standing up?
- Forgetfulness: Do they seem more forgetful than usual or have difficulty remembering recent events?
- Fatigue: Do they seem more tired or less energetic than in previous years?
- Missed Medications: Are their medications being taken as prescribed, or do you notice any missed doses?
- Personal Hygiene: Are they neglecting personal grooming, such as not showering or wearing the same clothes for several days?
- Unexplained Weight Loss: Have they lost weight or are they eating less than normal?
- Household Maintenance: Is their home in disarray, or are they struggling with daily chores like laundry, cleaning, and cooking?
- Isolation: Do they seem withdrawn or disengaged from activities they used to enjoy?
- Health Issues: Are there any unexplained health symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, or persistent pain?
- Mood Changes: Have you noticed any significant shifts in their mood, such as increased irritability, sadness, or anxiety, that seem out of character for them?
“If you notice any of these changes, it might be a sign that your loved one needs additional support,” Jumper said. “Bridging Resources West Virginia connects families to the right resources to help their aging loved ones feel comfortable and cared for at home just like they’ve always done for you.”
