PENDELTON COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – A family-friendly day trip to Pendleton County, West Virginia, awaits you! Seneca Rocks, Smoke Hole Caverns, Yokum’s Vacation Land, and Spruce Knob. If you’re looking for a doable getaway with proximity to multiple activities, here’s the perfect destination.
You can start your trip at breathtaking Seneca Rocks, above the North Fork River. Seneca Rocks formed when resistant rock layers eroded unevenly, leaving a dramatic monolith with a central spire. This granite giant has drawn climbers and hikers for decades. For seasoned alpinists, the leaning spires and classic routes provide a timeless test of skill and nerve. For visitors who prefer soaking in scenery, Seneca Rocks yields a postcard-worthy backdrop.

Beyond the scenic drives and well-marked trails through the Monongahela National Forest, even a simple overlook stroll rewards you with a place you’ll remember long after you’ve headed home.

Just a short distance away is Seneca Caverns at scenic Germany Valley. It offers cavern tours, a restaurant, a gift shop, a picnic area, and gemstone mining. The DayTripper magazine spoke with a representative of Seneca Caverns, who stated that they will be closing on Thanksgiving this year and will open for the 2026 season earlier on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The cavern is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and the restaurant Asbury’s is also open on the same days. You can visit senecacaverns.com for more information.

Nearby, the only lodging in Seneca Rocks, Yokum’s Vacation Land, is family-owned since 1938 and features rustic charm and friendly hospitality, offering a motel, cozy cabins, and teepees.

The general store has souvenirs and Yokum’s Grill, famed for its hot dogs, a tasty stop that locals and travelers alike adore, with the best view! The DayTripper Magazine spoke with a family member, Luke Yokum, who stated, “Yokum’s is a one-stop shop for your trip to Seneca Rocks. We have several unique lodging choices with great views of the beautiful rock formation. While here, you can pick up groceries, camping, and miscellaneous supplies at the store while also enjoying some good food at Yokum’s Grill. Yokum’s is conveniently located near lots of natural exploration opportunities. Before heading home, you can check out our souvenir options at the store. A favorite place among many, we welcome guests during all seasons, and are open 365 days a year.”

Only a short drive away, visit Smoke Hole Caverns, open year-round, offering a log motel beside the entrance to the caverns. The caverns offer a subterranean escape that’s perfect for any family. The caverns feature breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral glints. Guided tours blend geology with engaging stories, making the experience informative for adults and kids. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are recommended. Smoke Hole Caverns and Log Cabin Resort features a 26,000 ft2 gift shop, West Virginia’s largest, offering a treasure of souvenirs, handcrafted items, and outdoor gear, providing plenty of mementos and gifts. The shop’s proximity makes it a convenient, no-stress shopping stop. The gift shop features the Moonshine Café, and while you shop, let the kiddos enjoy some mini golf. Also, only 2.5 miles away is the Log Cabin Resort area featuring a pool, single and double rooms, and a sweetheart suite with a jacuzzi. Cabin accommodations are also available.

As you head home, one last stop you need to make is Spruce Knob. It’s West Virginia’s highest point at 4,861 feet; it definitely rewards visitors with expansive, sweeping views across the Allegheny Highlands. The summit views provide rolling ridges, distant valleys, making for panoramic photo opportunities for every season.

Why do these destinations work for a day trip or weekend getaway? It’s simply the proximity of them, they sit within a doable driving radius, making it feasible without the long-haul travel. You’ll experience a variety of landscapes, rock-climbing, subterranean, shopping, and high-country viewpoints without losing the sense of exploration that makes a weekend feel special. Since the holiday spirit is in the air, these unique gift shops become inviting.

So grab your camera and your sneakers and enjoy West Virginia, whether it’s a day trip or weekend getaway, there are many unique adventure opportunities. What are you waiting for?
