RICHWOOD, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack on Wednesday presented more than $2,000 in unclaimed property funds to the Richwood Police Department in connection with the West Virginia Treasury’s September online firearms auction.
“Safer communities are crucial to a better West Virginia. That is why we must do everything in our power to support our law enforcement agencies,” Treasurer Pack said. “My team is proud to return these funds to the Richwood Police Department. The people of Nicholas County have nearly 41,000 unclaimed property listings totaling over $3.3 million. I encourage everyone to check our online database to see if my Office is holding any money for you or your family.”
Treasurer Pack presented $2,412.42 to Richwood Mayor Gary Johnson and Richwood Police Chief Dan Pitts during a check presentation Wednesday afternoon at Richwood City Hall.
The check came from the Office’s September online firearms auction where a dozen firearms were sold.
“For us, being a small department, training and equipment is very valuable. We’re a small city with a small budget so this will go a long way and help us out,” Chief Pitts said.
Treasurer Pack recently presented more than $24,000 to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, more than $8,000 to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office and a more than $5,000 check to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office. The winning bid amount from the auction was $130,100 placed from a federal firearm licensed dealer in West Virginia. It was the first winner from West Virginia to participate in the Office’s online firearms auction.
“Modernizing our Unclaimed Property program by implementing online firearms auctions is and will be crucial to helping law enforcement around the state,” Treasurer Pack said. “We are now able to return dollars back to their budgets at a quicker rate with nearly 2,000 firearms sold totaling more than $400,000 this year alone.”
