LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – In 1964, the world was introduced to a lovable animated reindeer named Rudolph. As the Christmas season approaches and these classic films are brought back to life, one quote stands out during this season of giving: “A toy is never truly happy until it is loved by a child.”
The West Virginia State Police are once again making Christmas possible for children in Greenbrier County through their annual toy drive. Donations of new, unopened and unwrapped toys are now being accepted through December 12 at either the Lewisburg or Rainelle Detachment.
With needs that range from infants to teens, the department has no problem finding children in need during the holidays. While toys are preferred, there are instances where clothing donations have been made, as well as items for older children. Monetary donations are not requested as the department prefers that the donor do the shopping.
Each year, several hundred man-hours go into the collection, wrapping and distribution of gifts. Once all the packages are wrapped and ready for delivery, a group of Troopers, along with volunteers and Santa Claus himself, visit the children on Christmas Eve to deliver the gifts in person. If enough donations are made, gifts will be delivered on two days this year instead of just Christmas Eve.
“It’s also selfless that for the last few years some of our troopers and civilian employees have spent their Christmas Eve out with us doing this and sacrificed time with their families,” said Sergeant N.J. Hersman, Assistant Detachment Commander, Lewisburg Detachment.
When asked how it feels to play such an important role in providing Christmas to children, Sergeant N.J. Hersman replied, “It’s deeply rewarding to see the community come together for such an important cause. Being part of something that brings happiness to local children and eases the burden on families during the holidays gives all of us a real sense of purpose and pride,” he said. “It’s important for us as a community to recognize there are people not as blessed as we are, and that the holiday season is the perfect time to dig a little deeper, show kindness, give back, and make someone’s Christmas a little brighter.”
As the season of giving approaches, we can all remember what it’s like to be a child at Christmas. The twinkling eyes, the sound of sleigh bells and the magic that fills the air. Knowing that you make a difference by donating a brand-new toy to a local child in need is not just about the gift itself, but in the love that’s given with it.
