LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – In May, one woman’s journey led her right back to the small town she calls home. Kara Marie Vaughan returned to Lewisburg after earning a B.A. in Fashion Design from Kent State University in 2023, followed by a M.S. in Journalism from West Virginia University. With a wealth of knowledge and years of study, she discovered a business that would combine both her visual creativity with that of the written word.

Kara Marie Copywriting LLC focuses not only on content but also on creating a vision that demands attention. From website copy and design to social media marketing, graphic design, branding and photography, this young visionary is as well-spoken as she is creative. “I draw a lot from my designer background,” Vaughan says. “I’d like to emphasize that I’m a content marketer, but I’m also a copywriter. With copywriting, you specialize in clear, compelling words that sell. I tailor words to the audience and look at what matters to the customer.”

From a marketing standpoint, Vaughan believes in the non-traditional approach compared to traditional advertising. “Traditional marketing interrupts people to get attention, such as television, radio and print,” she says. “Content marketing, on the other hand, attracts people. It builds trust and long-term relationships with the audience. What I do is blogs, newsletters and email marketing designed to achieve more long-term goals.”

As every business owner knows, creating a professional and polished look is one of the best ways to attract customers. Whether it’s a compelling Facebook post, an amazing product photo or an attention-grabbing website, it’s important to stand out above and beyond the competition. “My creative process includes colors, textures and prints – similar to designing clothes,” Vaughan admits. I think a lot of my creativity comes from my design training. But when it comes to research and audience building, there’s more of a strategy that I look at,” she reveals. “I look at what my customer is doing and what could be improved, how I can change things and what benefits they will get from that.”

Based in Lewisburg, Vaughan responded with a laugh when asked to share her business hours. “Well, I’m always working to be honest,” she chuckled. “But, I’ll say 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.” With a lead time on new projects of 1-2 weeks, Vaughan admits that the exact timeframe really depends on the project. “A full design build-out may take a few weeks, but a smaller, more achievable project is usually a week,” she says. “I try to do a quick turnaround time. Logo design is a longer creative process because it’s usually done when a business is starting out, and you want it to be perfect. I do a lot of graphic design and hand-drawn logos, and that’s a little longer process.”

In an effort to make her business accessible to every customer, Vaughan offers a variety of options to fit every project and budget. “I meet the client where they are, whether that means hourly, a per-project price or a monthly subscription,” she says. “I’m never going to price-gouge or nickel-and-dime someone. I’m passionate about small businesses, and my golden rule is that I will always treat their business like it’s my own,” she continues. “People should know that I’m a storyteller – it’s all snowballed into a storytelling career through words and visual design. It’s about telling your brand’s story. I’m not just trying to sell a product or service. I’m trying to sell your brand.”
