SHADY SPRING, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack visited Raleigh County on Tuesday, Aug. 12 to present a more than $5,000 unclaimed property check to the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia, located at the Matthew Pack Children’s Home in Shady Spring.
The Matthew Pack Children’s Home, named after Treasurer Pack’s son, has a forty-year history of meeting the needs of autistic and developmentally delayed children.
“I’m proud my office was able to return these lost funds to such an important non-profit organization,” Pack said. “The Matthew Pack Children’s Home is near and dear to my heart. Earlier this summer, my family and I helped rededicate the home in my son’s memory. I’m thrilled these funds will help provide more opportunities for children in need.”
Pack last week joined Rep. Carol Miller to present the unclaimed property check, valued at $5,270.38, which came from a stale dated check and miscellaneous checks.
The check was presented to Children’s Home Society of West Virginia CEO Mary White to highlight the organization in light of National Non-Profit Day, which was Aug. 18.
“On behalf of the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia, we are so very excited and thankful for our unclaimed property check from the State Treasurer’s Office,” White said. “This money will be used to help our children in foster care, and it will make a big difference.”
The staff at the Matthew Pack Children’s Home help children learn communication skills, coping mechanisms, and independence. The shelter was previously named the Cherry Hill Shelter and the Southern West Virginia Exceptional Youth Emergency Shelter.
Rededicated as the Matthew Pack Children’s Home in June 2025, the shelter has now expanded to a 12-bed home (previously 5-bed) complete with a full-size industrial kitchen, walk-in pantries, dining room, recreation room, sensory room, living room, and visitation room.
Pack said his office’s Unclaimed Property Division returned $1.8 million to individuals, businesses and organizations in West Virginia during July, the first month of the new fiscal year. More than was returned during fiscal year 2025, which was a new record compared to the previous year.
