The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans beat the Wyoming East Warriors 5-3 on Thursday, May 20.
Wyoming East got on the board in the first inning when Paige Laxton hit an RBI single on a 1-2 count.
East put up three runs in the fourth frame to claim the lead. Josi Ervin and Annabelle Honaker each reached on errors, and then Taylor Graham knocked both in with a bases-clearing triple. Graham would later steal home and give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
East held off a rally by the Warriors when they scored two runs in the seventh, but with the tying run at home plate, Graham struck her out and sealed the deal.
Josi Ervin earned the victory on the rubber for the Spartans. The lefty went six innings, allowed three runs on four hits and struck out 10. Graham threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen for the save.
Olivia Hylton was in the pitcher’s circle for Wyoming East. She surrendered five runs on four hits over six innings and also struck out ten.
Honaker, Ella Asbury, Ervin, and Graham each collected one hit to lead East Spartans. East tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Brooke Davis led the way with three.
The Spartans ran into a juggernaut of a program in Point Pleasant on Saturday, May 22. Not only did East have to play them once, but twice in the doubleheader.
The Spartans lost the first game 6-0 in a contest where they just could not seem to get much going.
Point Pleasant took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning on a single by Havin Roush and a double by Kylie Price.
Unfortunately for East, they never recovered. Lindsey Black played well and was 3-3 at the plate, but PP added two home runs later in the game and cruised to an easy victory.
The Spartans also lost the nightcap 10-2.
Honaker went 2-3 to lead East on offense. Josie Patterson went 1-2 and drove in both Spartan runs.
East is now 12-5 and will look to get back on track this week.
