New Mayor Elected In Town Of Alderson
“Citizen Party” candidate L. Ralph McClung was the only member of his party to win election in Alderson as he polled 214 votes to defeat incumbent mayor Earl Berkley who received 207 votes.
Incumbent Andrew Russell, who was unopposed, polled over 300 votes to win re-election to the city recorders post.
Although losing the race for mayor, the “Peoples Party” ticket won all five city council seats. Winning candidates were Rodney Pack with 251 votes, Howard McVey with 254 votes, 238 votes, Tom Housby with 220 votes.
“Citizens Party” candidates who failed to win the council seats were Kyle “Bud” Ballard with 198 votes, J.P. “Jack” Johnson with 107 votes, Mrs. Ophelia Davis with 171 votes, H. Donald Bice with 181 votes and Herman Foster with 171 votes.

Looney Family Blessed With Two Doctors
An Alderson minister now has two doctors in the family.
Dr. Gerald K. Looney, son of Rev. and Mrs. N. W. Looney has taken the position of Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Assistant Professor of Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine as Tucson. He will also be Director of Emergency Services.
The position was effective Tuesday.
Dr. Looney’s brother, Dr. Timothy Jan Looney, recently graduated from the West Virginia University School of Medicine and will intern at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Both doctors are married and Dr. Gerald Looney has four children.
Before assuming his duties in Tucson, Dr. Looney was Physician-In-Chief of the Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Brighton, Mass.
At Kennedy, Looney is credited with many accomplishments including the first infant and young child health questionnaire for data processing, making Kennedy a leader in hospital emergency room procedure and instituting the first medically oriented music therapy program.
At Arizona, Dr. Looney will concentrate on emergency medical services which he called the most neglected area in American medicine.

Alderson Lions Club Inducts Three New Members
The Alderson Lions Club met at the Big Wheel restaurant in Alderson on Memorial Day, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. Thirty-one members and guests were present. Special guests at the meeting included District 29N Governor Rudy Holbrook and his wife. Lion Lynn Holbrook. Past International Director Richard Ruff, and Past District 29N Governor Roy Coffman.
After dinner, the club heard from District Governor Holbrook. He spoke about work in progress to form Leo Clubs at Greenbrier East and Greenbrier West. Leo Clubs are modeled after Lions Clubs and offer service opportunities to youth in grades 9-12.
After his talk, Lion Rudy inducted three new members into the Alderson Club: Chess Parker, Roy Grimes and Jeff Rogers. The new Lions were sponsored, respectively, by Lions John McCurdy, Bill Bryan and Rick Parker.
The Alderson Lions Club meets every second and fourth Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Big Wheel restaurant in Alderson.
