LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – The Lewisburg City Council on Tuesday approved new regulations requiring residents to remove dog waste from public and private property and prohibiting animals in the city’s central greenspace, as part of an effort to improve community cleanliness and safety.

Ordinance 324 was passed after a brief discussion during the regular session at the Paul R. Cooley Council Chambers. Mayor Beverly White called the measure “a reasonable step” to address complaints from downtown business owners and residents about unattended animal waste.

In addition to the ordinance, council members approved Resolution 584, authorizing Pay Request 41 for the ongoing Water Treatment Plant Improvement Project. City Manager Misty Hill and members of the Finance Committee noted that work remains on schedule, with Chapman Technical Group submitting an amendment for additional construction oversight.

Mayor White delivered the Finance Committee report, which included updates on multiple infrastructure and community projects. The council authorized pay requests and change orders for the Lafayette Street Stormwater Project and approved contracts for wildlife management services to address skunk and deer populations in city limits.

A quote for fencing at the proposed dog park was also approved, along with a contract for Teddy A. Mills as the Water Plant Operator.

The council voted to approve pay increases for two Lewisburg Police Department officers: Ryan Johnson, who recently completed the West Virginia State Police Academy and a one-year probationary period, and Jacob Thomas, who finished his probationary period as well. Chief of Police Chris Teubert also briefed council members on upcoming Special Response Team training initiatives.

Mayor White and City Manager Hill also presented a “Year in Review” report from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM), highlighting the school’s ongoing partnership with the city.

The council approved funding support for the upcoming Lewisburg Literary Festival under its Arts and Humanities budget.

The next regular meeting of the Lewisburg City Council is scheduled for Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

For information on how to participate in meetings via Zoom, residents can contact Lewisburg City Hall at (304) 645-2080 by 3 p.m. on the day of the meeting.
