Gov. Jim Justice announced that he will be calling for a special session of the West Virginia State Legislature on Monday, June 7, beginning at noon.
The purpose of this session will be to appropriate money the state has already received from the federal government for the Department of Health and Human Resources and the Department of Education, Justice explained.
During Tuesday’s briefing, Justice stated that West Virginia had a $152.2 million surplus at the end of May. “We are pushing and knocking on the doors of $400 million in surplus,” he said.
Justice added that in his request, he wanted the legislature to commit $150 million of this surplus cash to the state’s road and maintenance fund.
A total of 402 projects will take place throughout the state covering 742.84 miles of roadway. The projects will address 17 road slips and hill slides, 40 bridges and 111 other projects, if passed by the legislature, according to Justice.
“I think this will bring a lot of goodness, a lot of extra jobs, a lot of extra opportunity and, more than anything, we will get our roads fixed,” Justice said.
Additionally, during the press briefing, Justice stated that registration for the West Virginia vaccination lottery, newly named “Do It For Baby Dog,” begins on June 4 at 5 p.m.
