HUNTINGTON- Central Greenbrier 10U did everything they could, including an attempted comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning, but unfortunately fell just short on Monday night when they lost to Mineral County 7-5 in the state tournament in Huntington.
With the loss, Central Greenbrier’s run is now officially over.
Mineral Co. jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning and set the tone early, especially considering they had already defeated CG just last Friday.
But Central Greenbrier answered and climbed a little closer in the bottom half as Carson Parker ripped an RBI single that scored Colt Cline.
That score remained the same until the third inning when Mineral County put two more runs on the board thanks to two RBI base hits, a triple and a single, and after three completed innings, Mineral had jumped out to a 6-1 lead.
But on this night, Central’s biggest attribute may have been their perseverance and resilience.
After holding Mineral County to a scoreless fourth frame, CG got the bats going when it was their turn at the plate and did most of the damage with two outs.
Mace Dolan-White had a single sandwiched in between two quick outs. Then, CG piled up five consecutive hits from Mad. Dolan-White (single), Brayden Elmore (single), Keenan Adkins (double), Wyatt Bostic (single), and Sam Shirley (single). Adkins double scored three runs and Bostic’s hit knocked in one, and just like that, Central Greenbrier cut the deficit to just 6-5.
But that would be as close as they would get.
Mineral County added an insurance run just for good measure in the fifth and CG went down 1-2-3 in the final frame and packing their bags to head back to the friendly confines of Greenbrier County became a reality.
Central Greenbrier outhit Mineral 9-7 with Adkins’ 3-run double leading the way.
Adkins took the loss on the mound after throwing four innings with seven hits allowed and striking out two. Parker threw two innings of shutout baseball.
The community is proud of the 8–10-year-olds. During summer months when school is on break, Little League baseball is where the entertainment comes from and the Central Greenbrier 10U team provided the county with a bunch of it.
The team finished the all-star season with a final record of 7-2.
