LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – Two individuals were arrested Monday after a welfare check in downtown Lewisburg led police to uncover suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia inside a running vehicle, according to authorities.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Greenbrier County Magistrate Court, an officer of the Lewisburg Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked along Court Street North shortly before noon on Monday, June 23. The caller reported a gray Subaru with two unresponsive occupants who appeared to be under the influence.
Upon arrival, the officer found a man slumped over the steering wheel and a woman similarly slumped in the passenger seat. The engine was still running, according to the complaint.
After knocking on the window multiple times, the female subject eventually awoke and opened the door. She was identified as Keri Sarver. The officer then attempted to wake the male driver, later identified as Zackary Smith, who appeared “highly disoriented” and showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and an unsteady gait, according to the report.
When asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, both Sarver and Smith denied possessing contraband. However, officers observed several items in plain view associated with narcotics use, including burnt foil, cut straws and small baggies.
Additional units arrived to assist. A further search of the vehicle revealed syringes, a green powdery substance believed to be fentanyl, multiple white pills and a large quantity of cash, said officers.
Smith and Sarver were both taken into custody and charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and drug conspiracy. Smith also faces an additional charge of driving while impaired. Both were transported to the Lewisburg Police Department for processing.
Smith’s bail has been set at $25,000. At the time of publishing, Sarver is not listed as an inmate at Southern Regional Jail.
