HINTON- After grabbing an early 2-1 lead after the first inning on Tuesday night, the Central Greenbrier 8–10-year-old all-star team’s game with Beckley got wild to say the least.
However, when the dust finally settled, it was Central Greenbrier who pulled out an exciting 19-15 win and picked up their second win in as many days.
CG rallied for a commanding 9-1 lead in the second inning. Sam S led off the inning with a walk then Barron T singled to center. Two more walks to Aiden K and Tucker C led to a run and at that point it was 3-1, CG. Barron T would then score on a fielder’s choice and a couple batters later, a bases loaded walk to Keenan A scored another CG run. The frame was finished off with an RBI single from Carson P and a 2-run base knock from Wyatt B.
Beckley trimmed their deficit to 9-2 in the second, but the third inning was a completely different story.
Six walks, three hits, and an error allowed Beckley to not just get back in the game, but to take an 11-9 lead. Keenan A finally got out of the inning with a big strikeout although two runs had already scored during the at-bat.
But if there’s one thing Central Greenbrier is showing early in the tournament, it’s resiliency.
Showing no signs of any negativity after falling behind, CG erupted for seven more runs in the top of the fourth frame. Sam S had an RBI single, and Barron T added a 2-run base hit to highlight the inning as CG led 16-11.
After Beckley scored four runs immediately after that and cut the lead to 16-15, Central’s pitching and defense stepped up over the final two innings and did not allow another run in the game and added three more for themselves just for good measure. Central Greenbrier went on to win game number two.
