Charleston, W.Va. (WVDN) – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) recognized 223 8th-grade students from West Virginia middle schools, public charter schools and the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind as 2025 Knights of the Golden Horseshoe today at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston. These top-scoring students were honored during three recognition ceremonies.

The WVDE inducted the students as part of the 309th anniversary of the Golden Horseshoe legacy, recognizing them for their extensive knowledge of West Virginia history and culture. The annual test, given to every 8th-grade student, spotlights Mountain State civics, government, geography and numerous other categories. These newly inducted knights will join the more than 15,000 students who have received this prestigious honor.

“The Golden Horseshoe allows West Virginia students to be recognized for their incredible academic prowess and enthusiastic pride in the Mountain State,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “Our history and culture continue to flourish as the next generation of Mountaineers share their knowledge as ambassadors of West Virginia.”

In addition to student recipients, WVDE Director of Student Enrichment Joey Wiseman was inducted as an honorary Knight of the Golden Horseshoe. His unyielding support of students and unwavering dedication to achievement exemplify the spirit and purpose of the Order of the Golden Horseshoe.

The Golden Horseshoe legacy dates back to 1716 when Governor of the Virginia Colony Alexander Spotswood organized and recognized a delegation of men to explore the land west of the Allegheny Mountains (most of which is now West Virginia). He presented each with a small golden horseshoe to commemorate their bravery in crossing the mountain. The Golden Horseshoe remains the longest-running program of its kind in the country, with annual state recognitions dating back to 1931.

View the complete list of 2025 Golden Horseshoe winners and learn more about the event by visiting the program page on the WVDE website.
