H. S. Band Plays At Opening Of Playground
A concert by the Greenbrier High School band featured the official opening of Ronceverte’s Island Park playground. A large number of children were on hand to begin a summer of enjoyment of the fine facilities now provided at the playground. The wading pool will be ready for use next week.
The opening of the Island Park swimming pool has been set for June 9. It will be under the direction of Stanley Leist and Raymond Taylor, both of whom are qualified life guards.
Rooms Wanted
The Lewisburg Chamber of Commerce is asking the people of Lewisburg and vicinity to report any rooms that they have for rent during the Fair. This is being done to help the shortage of rooms during the State Fair, and in cooperation with the State Fair officials.
Go To Jackson’s Mill
Misses Peggy Neal, Barbara Jones and Edith (Twinkle) Montgomery all students at Lewisburg High School, will leave on June 11 for Jackson’s Mill where they will attend Rhododendron Girls State. These girls were chosen for their leadership, character, honesty, scholarship and co-operation.

Statue Is Back!
The Spartan Statue is back at Greenbrier East! The eight-foot, golden statue of a Spartan, the mascot of Greenbrier East High School, was returned to the school by Sheriff deputies. The statue was found in a field near the school on Powell Road. Principal Paris Hume said the statue has been damaged considerably and that the Vocational Department of the School is in the process of trying to repair it.
Poll Taken
In a poll at the group’s convention here, West Virginia Young Democrats favored Sen. Robert C. Byrd for president and state Supreme Court Justice Jim Sprouse for governor.
Miss Mann Awarded Radio
Dick Skaggs, local Purina dealer, presented a transistor radio to Mary Ann Mann from the Purina Company for being the State 4-H Dog Project Winner. Mary Ann became the winner through her work with dog obedience training, her participation in local dog shows, and through her active participation in other 4-H and community events. She is a member of the Central Willing Workers 4-H Club.

County Commission Authorizes Putting Gambling Referendum On November Ballot
After listening to public comment and explaining their rationale for making such a decision, Greenbrier County’s three commissioners voted unanimously to let the citizens decide whether or not gambling should be allowed at The Greenbrier. In 1999, the West Virginia legislature passed a bill which would allow a limited gaming facility at the hotel if approved by the county’s voters.
GEHS Convert Choir Received National Recognition
The Concert Choir of Greenbrier East High School received notification by the North American Music Festivals that they have the distinction of placing in the top ten choirs of 19 festivals held this past spring. The East Choir, under the direction of Susan Adkins, participated in the North American Musical Festival in May where they received a superior rating.
Organizations, City Start GCCC Campus Lawn Restoration
Carnegie Hall, Greenbrier Community College Center, North House Museum, Greenbrier Community Foundation, The Lewisburg Foundation and the Lewisburg Preservation and Enhancement Alliance are working with the city of Lewisburg to restore and enhance the campus lawn at the corner of Washington and Church streets. The City of Lewisburg recently received a restoration and beautification grant to restore the original sidewalk that runs from the North House Museum to Carnegie Hall and to landscape the corner of the lawn.
