LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Can you quote lines from The Princes Bride by heart? Or do you still remember the scene from Zorro where Antonio Banderas pulls out his sword, and the light reflects perfectly along the length of the shining blade? And we all know that light sabers are the best thing about Star Wars! These may be cheesy cinematic moments, but deep down, we all think it’s really cool, right?
Well, now here’s your big chance to be the hero with a blade- only this time, it’s real. And scholarships are available!
Carnegie Hall is now offering The Art of Fencing, a six-week series taught by Dr. Russell Amundson. The first session is for children ages 10-17 and will take place on Tuesdays, May 13 – June 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Session 2 will be for adults 18 years old or older, and will take place on Thursdays, May 15 – June 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The series is an introduction to the art of fencing, where students will learn, practice and utilize the basics of fencing footwork, bladework and strategy. Culminating in an interclass tournament, participants will experience the thrill of “chess at ninety miles an hour.”
All needed equipment is provided for youth classes except personal protective gear. Adult students will be required to purchase personal protective gear, masks, jackets, foil and gloves, with equipment recommendations and discounts available through Carnegie Hall. Total price for adult outfitting is approximately $180.
Registration is $225/members and $250/nonmembers, but automatic scholarships are available where participants pay only $60.
