FAIRLEA- The number one ranked team in the state, the Jefferson Cougars came to Spartan Yards on Friday night and battled not only the Spartans, but some rainy, gloomy weather.
Due to that weather, the game ended after five innings and unfortunately for the Spartans, they were on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat.
Other than the third inning, the game was a pitcher’s battle between East’s Nelson Lynch and the Cougars’ Andrew Engle.
But it was in that third frame that decided the contest. Nayan Dominguez led off the inning with a triple and then eventually moved to third with n a single and walk. With the bases loaded, Jefferson’s power hitter Serf Guerra hit a bases clearing, 3-run double to right field and gave the Cougars the 3-0 lead.
The Spartans (14-9) never really threatened from that point on and only had one hit the entire game which came from Zion Detko.
Lynch was solid on the mound and scattered seven hits over five innings and allowed three runs.
Engle gave up just the one hit and struck out only one batter. His defense played well behind him.
Jefferson moved to 22-2 on the season.
Game two was supposed to be played on Friday night, but the rainy weather moved the nightcap to Saturday morning, April 26 at 11:00 AM.
East will then host St. Albans around 4:30 on Saturday as well.
