RONCEVERTE, W.Va. (WVDN) – A Greenbrier County man was arrested Sunday afternoon after sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunfire and yelling near his residence and later engaged in a physical altercation with him, authorities said.
Chad Jeremy Wilson, of Ronceverte, was taken into custody on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and obstructing an officer, according to the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy responded to a call at approximately 2:48 p.m. reporting possible gunshots and shouting, including threats such as “Kill me” and “I’ll kill you,” in the area of Massy Road. The caller identified the male voice as her neighbor, Wilson.
Upon arriving in the area, the deputy spoke with a woman who confirmed hearing shouting followed by two gunshots. The deputy retrieved his patrol rifle and approached the nearby residence through a wooded area but returned to his vehicle after hearing additional screaming to await backup and confirm Wilson’s location.
Deputies had previously responded to multiple incidents involving Wilson at his residence on Morgan Hollow Road, including calls for disturbances and welfare checks, the sheriff’s office said.
When the deputy arrived at the home, he observed Wilson sitting on a picnic table holding a dog.
Wilson reportedly ignored verbal commands and attempted to re-enter the residence. Concerned for officer safety and the possibility Wilson was retrieving a firearm, the deputy followed him inside and attempted to detain him.
According to the complaint, Wilson resisted arrest, stating, “I’m not resisting,” while pulling away and struggling with the deputy. The altercation continued through the home and onto a porch, where the deputy reported being struck by Wilson’s arm. The deputy eventually brought Wilson to the ground outside and detained him.
No firearm or injured individuals were located during a search of the property, despite the earlier report of gunfire.
Wilson was transported to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center for evaluation after complaining of wrist and knee pain. He was later cleared medically and taken to Southern Regional Jail following processing at the sheriff’s department.
